Book Review: Big Little Lies

Big Little Lies was one of New York Times bestseller of 2014 for several weeks which made me want to know what was all the fuss about and decided to read it. I don't regret it.

This book was released on July 2014 and was written by australian Liane Moriarty who also has another best seller called '' The Husband's Secret ''.

Big Little Lies follows the ''perfect '' lives of three mothers of elementary school kids living in Pirriwee, a beach side town in Australia. Three very different women that become best friends. The book begins with a crime that happened during a school event, everyone is shocked about it, and it starts to show pieces of the interrogation that the police did. Some people claim that it was obvious that it was going to happen, others say that they didn't have an idea. After reading that, you are left to wonder what  happened and most of all who was involved.

Then it makes a one year flashback until the accident. The book starts showing the lives of these 3 women: Madeline, a funny, multitasking, and straight to the point woman; Celeste, beautiful mother of 2 boys, incredibly wealthy with an envious life and Jane, who is a 25 year old single mother new in town. It involves all sorts of things: Friendship, problems with other mothers because of their children, domestic violence, love, self loathing, rebel kids and dysfunctional families, cheating husbands, second marriages, secrets, and a lot of gossip that lead to THAT night when the accident happened. All this wrapped up in an elementary school.  As you keep reading, you will start to get attached to the characters and like them, understand them and wonder how they can go through all these things.

The end is shocking, you would have never guessed what was going to happen and the reason why it happened is really disturbing.  I really recommend this book.

And guess what, while I was doing some research for this post, I found out that Big Little Lies will be adapted to a mini series for HBO starring Nicole Kidman and Reese Whiterspoon. Now there´s another reason to read this book...

Big Litte Lies fue uno de libros que estuvo en la lista de The New York Times Bestsellers del 2014 durante varias semanas, algo que llamó mi atención y me dio curiosidad por leer este libro. Y no me arrepiento.

Este libro fue publicado en Julio del 2014 y fue escrito por la australiana Liane Moriarty quien también tiene otro bestseller llamado '' The Husband's Secret '' 

Big Little Lies sigue la vida ''perfecta''  de tres mujeres que tienen sus hijos en la escuela primaria. Tres mujeres muy diferentes que se convierten en mejores amigas.  El libro empieza con un crimen que ocurrió durante un evento de la escuela y todos los padres están sorprendidos de lo sucedido. Comienzas a leer fragmentos de la interrogación que llevó a cabo la policía con todos los presentes durante el evento.  Hay algunos padres que dicen que era obvio que eso iba a pasar, otros dicen que no tenían idea de nada.  Luego de leer eso, te quedas pensando qué pasó realmente y más que nada, quiénes estuvieron involucrados en esta muerte.

Luego de esta introducción, el libro hace un flashback a un año atrás a partir del cual se va a mostrar todo lo sucedido en este transcurso del tiempo hasta llegar al evento del colegio donde sucedió esta muerte.  

Empiezas a conocer la vida de tres mujeres: Madeline, siempre divertida, multitasking, y una mujer muy directa; Celeste, una mujer casada y hermosa que es madre de dos niños, increiblemente rica con una vida envidiable con la que todos sueñan; y Jane, una madre soltera de 25 años que es  nueva en el pueblo.

El libro muestra muchas cosas: amistad, problemas con otras mamás, violencia doméstica, amor, baja auto-estima, hijos rebeldes y familias disfuncionales, esposos que engañan a sus esposas, segundos matrimonios, secretos y mucho chisme que lleva a ESA noche en que el accidente ocurre. Todo esto ocurre en la vida de padres de familia de una escuela primaria.  A medida vas leyendo, empiezas a queres a los personajes y entenderlos y te preguntas cómo es que pueden soportar todo esto que ocurre en sus vidas.

El final es muy sorprendente, nunca te hubieras imaginado lo que iba a pasar y la razón tan horrible por la que todo se desencadenó.  Les recomiendo mucho este libro.

Y por cierto, este mes de mayo anunciaron que Big Little Lies va a convertirse en una mini serie para HBO con la participación de Nicole Kidman y Reese Whiterspoon.  Ahora sí tienen que leer el libro...
